The USA Science & Engineering Festival October 10 through 24, 2010 will hopefully encourage girls to study more math and science. Ruth Kiefer (pictured) is the festival Co-Director. Ruth was part of the team that organized the Inaugural San Diego Science Festival. There are a number of other women on the project team. There are also lots of volunteer opportunities available. With the USA Science and Engineering Festival Expo Weekend on the Washington Mall October 23-24, 2010 fast approaching, satallite events are popping up all over the country to encourage young people to study science, engineering and math.
One such event is the "Moms Night Out for STEM" (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), organized by the Iowa Math and Science Education Partnership and the Iowa State University Engineering College to encourage Moms to take a more "hands on" approach to their children's math and science education. Moms Night Out gatherings will be held October 18, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 pm. at 20 locations across Iowa, and will feature hands on happenings with local teachers and researchers to show parents how math and science can be made fun. Is there something happening in your neighborhood? Moms across the country should unite to help their daughters learn more math!
This is a great idea. I think young girls in middle school are the best target. Since it's in october, maybe we could focus on halloween costumes that focus on women n STEM roles. Make it cool instead of the opposite
