Too often, we hear how the media can't get it right when it comes to covering women's sport. When they get it right, we ought to acknowledge it.

So, kudos to the coverage of the Women's World Cup! Congratulations to the Japanese women for a consistent, persistent and top tier calibre of play. Congratulations to all the finalists for an exciting display of excellence. Thank you to the writers who dealt with technical merit and tactical insight. This was interesting, exciting. This was everyone sport should be and could be.

And for someone who played soccer decades ago, on a lonely field without the support or encouragement of anyone but herself, this was simple joy. This was a day long awaited and therefore more treasured.

Thank you, one and all, for bringing us a great World Cup!
